Bob hails originally from the west coast of Scotland but has long been based in London. An engaging solo singer and performer with an easy going sense of humour, he’s known also as an accomplished finger-style guitarist. Exploring a range of open tunings, his playing and song interpretations have been described as displaying rare sensitivity, lightness of touch and great technique.
He has produced a couple of solo albums When the Moon Sits Fat on a Scudding Cloud and After the Swithering which the national folk magazines have described variously as delightful, haunting, reflective and exquisite. Full reviews including by fROOTS, IRISH MUSIC and LIVING TRADITION magazines are to be found on this website.
A seasoned and experienced performer, Bob has appeared at countless clubs and festivals throughout the UK; he has played on the albums of various others and he has featured on many radio programmes. He has also hosted and organised a number of guitar workshops, focusing on alternative guitar tunings and song accompaniment.
As a departure from his regular repertoire, Bob also loves gigging as a duo with Benny Gallagher (McGuinness Flint, Gallagher & Lyle) and features extensively on Benny's most recent studio album At the Edge of the Wave, providing harmony vocals and second guitar parts. “Every time I sit down and play some music with Bob - I come away feeling feel enriched", says Benny Gallagher.
Bob's repertoire nowadays retains firm links with the tradition, but includes an array of contemporary songs as well as a smattering of pipe, harp and other tunes on guitar.
To this day, he also remains a founder member and organiser of the renowned Ram Folk Club in Surrey (2007 BBC Folk Club of the Year) www.theramclub.co.uk. Now in its 34th year, the club goes from strength to strength.
